An American flagged cargo ship, Maersk Alabama, was attacked by pirates. The captain is being held for ransom as a hostage. Pirates try to hold entire ships for ransom and some ship owners pay off to their ship and crew back. Reports are that the pirates are holding the captain in the ships life boat just off the ship where negotiations are ongoing. The ship flew an American flag because it operates in an American subsidiary of a Danish owned company.
